PRODUCT DEFINITIONS

Rhombus Industries produces an extremely wide variety of magnetic products. There are four general categories: Transformers, Inductors, Filters and Delay Lines.

TRANSFORMERS

Transformers are used in electronics for three basic reasons; Isolation, voltage change, and impedance matching.

Isolation: A simple transformer consists of a primary and a secondary winding. These windings are not electrically connected. However, when a changing voltage is applied to the primary winding, a changing magnetic flux is produced. This in turn induces a changing voltage in the secondary winding. The importance of this is that if there were to be a short circuit, and the voltage were to rise greatly, then the operator of the system on the secondary side will be protected. The transformer will not pass a direct current (DC) to the secondary side. Hence, safety is one of the most important aspects of the transformer.

Voltage change: By adjusting the turns of the windings the output voltages and impedance's can be changed. Voltage change is very important in power supply design as there may be only one voltage available, but several are required. A transformer can have one voltage at the input, (Primary side) and several voltages at the output (Secondary side) with the use of multiple secondary windings.

Impedance Matching: In order to minimize power loss, impedance between a source and its load must be matched. If the source is 100 ohm and the load is 150 ohm, a transformer can be inserted to match these impedance's.

Transformers come in a wide range of power handling capabilities. We generally build from 100 milli watts up to 200 watts. However we are constantly pushing this limit upward watt by watt. All Rhombus transformer part numbers are easily recognized as the part number will always begin with the letter T. (for transformer)

INDUCTORS

Inductors are usually a single winding with a core material. Inductors are simply storage devices for current. Just as a capacitor stores voltage, the inductor stores current. Most inductors are labeled with adjectives to describe their function. However all of them operate under the same principle. Depending upon the application, Inductors can also be referred to as "chokes", or simply "coils" All Rhombus inductor part numbers are easily recognized as the part number will always begin with the letter L. (L being the symbol for inductance)

FILTERS

Filters are used to pass certain signals while at the same time blocking others. Many filter circuits contain inductors and capacitors, while others can be as simple as a dual inductor. All Rhombus Filter part numbers are easily recognized as the part number will always begin with the letter F. (F for filter)

DELAY LINES

A delay line is a circuit component whose properties are such that it will, with extreme accuracy, take an input signal and produce the same signal at its output(s) but delayed by a precise amount of time. The simplest example of this is an ordinary piece of coaxial cable which is merely a transmission line used to couple signals from one part of a circuit to another. This coaxial cable will have an inherent delay that is directly associated with its physical length. It quickly becomes impractical to use a coaxial cable to delay signals more than a few nanoseconds (.000000001 seconds = 1ns or 1 Billionth of a second) due to the unreasonable lengths that would be involved. Therefore the design engineer would find a Dual In-Line or Single In-Line precision delay line an ideal solution.

Delay lines manufactured by Rhombus Industries have a delay range of 100 picoseconds (.000000000100 seconds or 100 trillionths of a second) to 1 microsecond (.000001 seconds or 1 millionth of a second).

If you come across an item not in our catalogs or on our Web Site, please contact us with your requirement. Rhombus may in fact produce it or something similar. If we do not make it chances are that it is under development as our Research and Development facility in Santa Ana, CA. is second to none.
